The Lowy Institute has a strong track record of producing original research and fostering debate on the full spectrum of nuclear issues, from arms control and security through to the future of nuclear energy. Priority topics include the future of non-proliferation and disarmament, nuclear strategic challenges in Asia, extended deterrence, the role of the civil nuclear industry in non-proliferation, and Australia’s nuclear policy dilemmas.

Much of the Institute’s work on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament is supported through a partnership with the Nuclear Security Project of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), involving George Shultz, Henry Kissinger, William Perry and Sam Nunn. The Institute was also closely involved with the 2008-2010 Australian-Japanese International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.

The Lowy Institute’s nuclear policy work is overseen by the Director of the International Security Program Rory Medcalf and the Institute’s Deputy Director Martine Letts. It is supported by Research Associate Fiona Cunningham  and Visiting Fellow John Carlson, former head of the Australian Safeguards and Nonproliferation Office.
This project is supported by the Lowy Institute’s partnership with the Nuclear Security Project. www.nuclearsecurityproject.org
