- The Philippines announced a new round of oil and gas exploration contracts in disputed waters in the South China Sea. Manila also settled its overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea with Indonesia, and joined Vietnam's call denouncing China's recent actions.
- Meanwhile, Vietnam looked to further diversify its alliances. During a presidential visit by Azerbaijani President the two countries vowed to strengthen ties. They aim to more than double two-way annual trade to US$1 billion.
- Similar dialogues were held last week between China and Tajikistan.
- In Myanmar, protests over the expansion of a Chinese copper mine reached a new height with the abduction of two Chinese employees; both were later released.
