This clip from the film Samsara really does put the 'industrial' in 'food industry'. As Jason Kottke observes, 'The chicken picker machine hoovering up chickens and depositing them into drawers is one of the most dystopian things I've ever seen.'

I've expressed scepticism previously about 'transformative technologies', which often fall short of expectations. But I sincerely hope that the push for lab-grown meat can make inroads into the global food industry. If it can be made affordable, lab-grown meat would be a huge step forward for animal welfare, would transform world agriculture, and would be a victory for the environment.

If that leaves you feeling giddy with promise, best not to read these two articles putting the sceptic's case against in vitro meat.
