Is Australia ready for its G20 Presidency?

On 1 December 2013, Australia will commence its twelve-month presidency of the G20, a role that will culminate in the hosting of the Brisbane G20 Summit, 15-16 November 2014.

This will be the most significant economic gathering of world leaders to have ever been held in Australia.

'In an integrated global economy, the world needs an effective forum to facilitate international economic cooperation’, says Lowy Institute G20 Studies Director Mike Callaghan.

‘There are high expectations that as chair of the G20 in 2014, Australia will help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the forum. To do so will require a tightly focused agenda aimed at achieving tangible outcomes on global issues. The pressure is on Australia to deliver’, he said.

G20 Studies Centre Director Mike Callaghan and G20 Research Associate Hugh Jorgensen are available for media comment. See contact details below.

G20 Studies Centre:

The Lowy Institute’s G20 Studies Centre has been closely monitoring G20 developments, providing independent analytical perspectives on the role of the G20.  Since it was established in 2012, the Centre has produced various research papers analysing G20-related policy developments from an Australian perspective.

During Australia's Presidency of the G20, the G20 Studies Centre will also be responsible for coordinating the 'Think20'. The Think20 is a network of think tanks and academics from G20 countries that are working to provide an important analytical input into the G20 process.

On 11 December, the G20 Studies Centre will host the first Think20 meeting to include a think tank representative from every G20 member.  Media are invited to register to attend this meeting. Please email hjorgensen@lowyinstitute.org

A collection of papers associated with the 11 December meeting, titled ‘Think20 Papers 2014: policy recommendations for the Brisbane G20 Summit’, will be publicly released by the G20 Studies Centre on 4 December 2013.
