Bryony Lau is a program officer with the Governance, Security and Justice team at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), which is an agency created by the Canadian government to support researchers in the developing world. She is responsible for grant-making in Southeast Asia and travels regularly around the region. Prior to joining IDRC in September 2013, Bryony worked for six years with the International Crisis Group, a conflict prevention organization.  From 2010 to 2013, she lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, and reported on the Philippines. She focused on the southern island of Mindanao, documenting the negotiations to resolve the longstanding Muslim insurgency, as well as other forms of political violence. From 2007 to 2010, she worked in Brussels, Belgium, as the lead editor of reports and briefings on Asia and francophone Africa. Before joining Crisis Group, Bryony was a researcher at Oxford Analytica, in the UK, and a political desk officer at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in Ottawa, Canada. Bryony holds a B.A. (Hon) in international relations and history from the University of Toronto and an M.Phil in international relations from the University of Oxford. She speaks English, French, Indonesian and a smattering of Mandarin Chinese.
