The Honourable James Spigelman AC was Chief Justice and Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales from 1998 to 2011. He is the author of several books and has published articles in legal journals in Australia, the United Kingdom, and Asia.
He developed close relationships between the Australian judiciary and judiciaries in China, Singapore, India, Japan, Hong Kong, and England and Wales. Between 1972 and 1975 he served as Senior Advisor and Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of Australia. Between 2012 and 2017 he served as Chair of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Since 2013 he has been a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal.
