Nominations open for the 2018 Australia–Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue

Nominations open for the 2018 Australia–Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue

Young people from Australia and Papua New Guinea are being encouraged to nominate to join the annual Australia–Papua New Guinea Emerging Leaders Dialogue which will be held in Cairns, Queensland from 3-6 December 2018.

The annual event is hosted by the Lowy Institute’s Aus-PNG Network, which aims to build ties between the two countries. Nominations are now open, with up to ten young professionals from each country selected to take part in the event.

“There are lots of connections between Australia and Papua New Guinea that go back decades,” said Jonathan Pryke, the Director of the Institute’s Pacific Islands Program. “Through the Dialogue we work to make sure those ties continue for the generations to come.”

The Dialogue was first held in 2013 at the initiative of the Foreign Ministers of both countries. Now in its sixth year, the event has connected more than 100 people and continues to maintain links through regular workshops and networking events in PNG and Australia through the Aus–PNG Network.

Former participants include figures from business, health, science, government, law, civil society and the media.

The program is run by the Institute with the support of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and institutions in PNG. It is supported by an Advisory Council which includes representatives from both countries.

This year’s dialogue will build on the experience of PNG on the world stage as the host of the APEC Leaders Summit, and will include discussion of tourism and travel and how it can strengthen relations between both countries.

Participants should be aged 40 or younger, and be able to demonstrate how they would contribute to building ties between Australia and PNG. More details on how to apply can be found at the Aus-PNG Network’s website

Nominations close Tuesday 25 September.
