5-minute Lowy lunch: Cordesman

15 October 2009 11:22

Yesterday the Lowy Institute hosted Professor Anthony Cordesman from the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, an authority on US national security who has made a very close study of the Afghanistan war. You can listen to his address here.

In our interview I departed a little from the usual format. Normally I just use my questions to let the speaker summarise their lecture, but yesterday I tried to press Professor Cordesman a little on the debate occurring in Washington between those who favour a nation-building approach in Afghanistan (Cordesman among them) and those who want a more narrow counter-terrorism focus.

My first question actually confuses that issue a little, and Cordesman corrects me. Then it gets more interesting...

Clearly, Cordesman has little time for the arguments of Washington Post columnist George Will; I just wish I had referred to a critic such as Andrew Bacevich, whose views Cordesman might hold in greater esteem.
