Airport security: The nightmare continues

The Age reports that the US Homeland Security Department is introducing new fingerprinting technology at airports, with a quote from an official saying the new measures will not create further delays. Those who have travelled to the US since 9/11 may chuckle somewhat derisively at such assurances. As Andrew Sullivan has argued on his blog, getting into and out of the US has become a nightmare that damages the US in economic and reputational terms.

The 9/11 experience is surely still too raw in America to really turn this around. It would take an extremely brave politician to argue that the US should reduce airport security. As our own former Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone discovered in 2005, you'll be shot down as soft on terrorism for daring to suggest that some of our airport security measures are just feel-good gestures that do nothing to reduce the threat.
