Australia's banks: Top 20 with a bullet

FT graphics have copped some flak here in the past. I'll leave the critique of their latest effort to Steve Grenville, but on face value it seems remarkable. Their print edition today tracks the world's 50 largest banks from 1999 to 2009. This online interactive version tracks the top 20.

Noticeable are the new entrants to the list: two Australian banks are now in the top 20 with  four in the top 50. That's more than the UK, Switzerland, Germany and France and equal to Japan which has one in the top 20 but four in the top 50. Overall that makes Australia's banking sector almost as large as that of the UK, Canada and Japan. The cautious bankers of Canada have also been rewarded and Brazilian banks have shot onto the list.
