Between policy and sentiment lies a reckless war

I have no doubt President Bush is being entirely sincere here:

President Bush has admitted to The Times that his gun-slinging rhetoric made the world believe that he was a “guy really anxious for war” in Iraq...Phrases such as “bring them on” or “dead or alive”, he said, “indicated to people that I was, you know, not a man of peace”. 

But as Atlantic Monthly blogger Matthew Yglesias has argued in regard to John McCain's beliefs, what matters is not Bush's attitude to war, but the policies he has implemented. Have they advanced the cause of peace or set it back?
