The Lowy Institute needs you. Applications are now open for the 2009 Michael and Deborah Thawley scholarship. This is a fantastic opportunity for a postgraduate student or recent graduate from an Australian tertiary institution to undertake funded research internships both at the Lowy Institute in Sydney and the Center for International and Strategic Studies in Washington, DC. There’s also a $5000 prize.

We are looking for the next generation of strategic thinkers, scholars and policy-makers with original and informed views on global security challenges, how they affect Australia and what Australia can do about them.

Just a word of advice: candidates will be assessed partly on the quality of their essay proposals, addressing the topic of Australia’s global strategic interests and role, or some aspect thereof. I emphasise the word 'global'.
