Commie flying saucers

Back in January I introduced you to a trailer for Iron Sky, a slightly campy new German sci-fi movie which imagines that, at the end of World War II, the Nazis escaped to the dark side of the moon and built a military space fleet which is about to be launched at earth. One of the most intriguing things about the film is its design, particularly the way design elements from Nazi ships, warplanes and even Zeppelins are incorporated into the fanciful spaceships.

If ever some bright Russian decided to make a similar movie about the communists, I imagine this is what a Red flying saucer would look like as it descended to earth in the night sky.

But that's no flying saucer. In fact, the above photo is taken from an extraordinary collection of shots of Buzludzha, in Bulgaria, which is a huge monument to communism completed in 1981 and now abandoned. What you're actually looking at is the domed ceiling of the building, with light poking through its many holes. Do take a look at photographer Timothy Allen's blog to see what the building looks like from a distance. It's quite breathtaking.

And below the fold, another gorgeous shot of the ceiling taken by Flickr user Nedko.
