Diplomacy: Not just for diplomats

One further thought on my previous post regarding the argument that diplomacy must only take place through foreign affairs departments: I see that Chinese President Hu Jintao has just met with the head of Taiwan's Kuomintang Party, which reminds me that Malcolm Cook wrote a post last year about the extensive party-to-party diplomacy occurring all over East Asia.

It also leads me to think that the dramatic thawing of relations between Taiwan and China is of substantial long-term strategic significance, and is being somewhat under-reported. True, the progress is still halting and could easily be reversed, but if they build a relationship that is less like Israel-Syria and more like UK-Europe, well, that changes a few things, doesn't it?
