In part 1 of this series, we were taken ever so slightly aback when McDonald's appropriated France's great comic-book heroes, Asterix and Obelix.

This second installment features another American fast food chain; specifically, it's the ads KFC is running here in Australia to mark its sponsorship of the Ashes cricket series. It's hard to believe this commercial has not caused even a small fuss:

Clearly the producers of the ad understand the iconic status of the Ashes urn in Australia's popular culture. In fact, the whole point of the ad seems to be to mock that myth, with Col Sanders in full Mr Bean mode, unwittingly committing an act of cultural vandalism.

For any American readers who don't quite grasp the gravity of this, it would be a bit like Foster's commissioning an ad for the US market in which Crocodile Dundee is touring the US National Archives. He stops to take a sip of ice cold beer and then absent-mindedly wipes the froth from his mouth with the Declaration of Independence.
