Hillary's bellicosity

23 April 2008 10:50

We’ll know later today whether Hillary Clinton has done well enough in the Pennsylvania primary to stay in the Democratic presidential nomination contest with Barack Obama. I wonder if voters will punish her for comments like this?:

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran (if it attacks Israel)," Clinton said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America"..."In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them," she said.

Tehran knows fully well that the US has the capacity to annihilate Iran. Bordering Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran hardly needs reminding of America’s capacity to remove regimes it doesn’t like, even without resorting to nuclear weapons, which is what Hillary is hinting at. And such public threats just elevate the self-regard of the regime. Nothing will please Tehran’s hardliners more than to be subject to such threats, and it will only attract more support to them.

Clinton’s comments also show a curious disregard for Israel’s own nuclear deterrent. Why does she even need to threaten Tehran with obliteration when she knows Israel could easily do that job itself?
