I just sat down with Lowy Institute Executive Director Michael Wesley to discuss Kevin Rudd's foreign policy legacy, and what we might expect from Prime Minister Gillard (the first time I have written that phrase; it will take some getting used to).

Michael argues that Rudd can look back on a strong foreign policy legacy, though disappointments include the lack of investment in Asian languages and the poor implementation of big picture initiatives.

As for the Gillard era, Michael says we should expect a less centralised foreign and national security policy. Power will revert back to the Department of Foreign Affairs, though according to Michael, that won't be with Stephen Smith in charge (we didn't get in to possible replacements, but how about Trade Minister Simon Crean?).
