A little closer to New Zealand

In a speech in Auckland yesterday, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd set out a few details on how he would like to further enhance our FTA with New Zealand. The ideas seem mostly sensible advances. The plan to 'reduce the amount of screening that currently occurs in relation to investment flows between the two countries' might be less popular in New Zealand than in Australia though: last year the Lowy poll reported findings that a majority of New Zealanders said the increasing  Australian ownership of New Zealand companies was a bad thing.

While talking of a desire to be 'ambitious' the Prime Minister avoided any direct mention of a joint currency (although this has more support in New Zealand than further Australian ownership of New Zealand companies) or political union (which only 23% of New Zealanders think would be a good thing for both countries).
