  • A third round of naval exercises involving the US and South Korean navies will take place west of the Korean peninsula. The location is sure to elicit response from China, but if the rhetoric is muted, it may indicate that recent engagement between US and Chinese Defense and Foreign policy officials has had some effect.
  • A few days old now, however US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's recent speech in Hawaii, at the beginning of her seven-nation tour of Asia, included reference to increased naval roles for Australia and India in the region.
  • Following from the above, the US Secretaries of Defense and State will be in Melbourne next week for the annual AUSMIN talks with their Australian counterparts. It's the second AUSMIN of the Obama Administration and the first for the Gillard Government.
  • Canada has been granted full membership of the Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS). The WPNS is a Navy-to-Navy structure with 20 full member countries and 4 observers. It aims to increase cooperation and build trust and confidence between navies by providing a framework to discuss maritime issues, exchange information, practice and demonstrate capabilities and exchange personnel.
  • Will we see the Iranian Navy outside the Arabian Gulf, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean'
  • It takes China just four years to build and commission a Type 054A frigate (pictured) from the date the ship is ordered.
