Movie trailer: Seeking a friend...

I've had some nice feedback on my Leonard Cohen post from yesterday so I'm tempting fate by philosophising again, but I'd say the jokes at the end of this trailer involving the cop who won't let a speeding infringement slide despite the fact that the world is about to end speaks to how deeply embedded are our social norms about law-abidance. Then again, the trailer also features a riot presumably brought on by the aforementioned impending apocalypse, so you might say that illustrates the opposite argument.

Realists will be attracted to the latter interpretation — they see the shadow of Thomas Hobbes lurking everywhere. Personally, I place more emphasis on the power of tradition and inherited practice to take the rough edges off the anarchical system, but talk to me again when the 70-mile-wide asteroid is about to hit earth.

Anyway, 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' looks like a sweet, melancholy little film, if you can get past Keira Knightley's pout.
