New York notes

There were TV trucks scattered around New York's magnificent post office building today, to record the last day that Americans can lodge their annual tax returns through the US Mail.

In conjunction with this deadline, FOX News has been promoting an anti-tax movement called the 'Tea Parties' (named after the Boston Tea Party), with events held all over the country today to protest the Obama Administration's profligacy.

Concern with government largesse is selective at FOX — not once over the last couple of days have I heard an anchor mention the Bush Administration's high spending. But what is striking about FOX News is not the bias so much (I was prepared for that) but how absurdly transparent that bias is. As propaganda, it is laughably ham-fisted.

The post office building itself, by the way, bears on its facade the inscription, 'Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.' A noble sentiment, though not one I associate with New York's most famous mail-man.
