No Homeland Security Department?

Well that didn't take long. The SMH reports this morning that the newly-elected Rudd Government is set to abandon plans for a Department of Homeland Security. But hang on: earlier this month, The Australian's Paul Kelly seemed certain the Homeland Security reorganisation would happen. Now the Herald reckons Rudd's National Security Adviser (another new initiative) could take over the job of coordinating agencies that would have been brought together under Homeland Security.

Kelly has excellent sources and even better instincts, so maybe the SMH has this wrong. Or maybe the anonymous Labor fontbencher quoted in the piece is flying a kite, trying to gauge public and media reaction to what would be the new Government's first broken promise.
