Obama's protectionism

Both sides of the presidential campaign seem to be indulging in some pretty ugly tactics at present, and the Obama ad below is just one example. But from an Australian perspective, its the populism and nationalistic chauvinism of the ad that should concern us.

Maybe this ad is just targeted at an audience that has been particularly badly affected by the globalisation of the car industry. And maybe Obama will be more pro-free trade than Democrat presidents have traditionally been. But the way this ad transforms the word 'foreign' into some kind of swear word is obnoxious and nasty, and it bodes ill for our trade relationship under an Obama Administration.
