The troubled Olympic torch relay will soon arrive in San Francisco under the threat of being cancelled to avert the problems visited upon it in Europe. Hillary Clinton, showing signs of desperation, has publicly called for President Bush to not plan to go to the opening ceremony 'absent major changes by the Chinese government.'  Yet, a revealing Zogby poll has just come out on American views of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the vexed question of boycotts. The responses are quite complex and critical of Clinton’s call. While 70% believe that it was wrong for China to have won the Olympics, the same number believe that an Olympic boycott would 'amount to grandstanding by world leaders that might help them politically in their own countries, but will have no effect on how China's leaders treat their own citizens.'
