Australians may be aware of our success in exporting our expertise in services and large-scale engineering projects, but rather less is known about the fact that the Gulf states have also been a good market for Australian manufactured goods. As Anthony Bubalo’s recent Policy Brief points out, half of Toyota’s Australian production output and a quarter of Holden’s find their way to the Middle East.

Now high speed ferries can be added to the mix, with the launch in Oman of the world’s fastest diesel-powered passenger ferry, which will make some of that country’s spectacular coastal scenery more accessible to tourists. The ferries are designed by Austal in Western Australia and indicate the market that could be found by Australian manufacturing companies with a global focus.
