Protectionism by any other name

Smoot-Hawley is a dirty word and old-fashioned protectionism is out of fashion. But at least protectionism had the virtue of clarity — as Mark Thirlwell wrote earlier this month, the modern practice is what's known as 'murky protectionism', a sly mix of subsidies, 'buy local' provisions and other tricks. Andrew Norton has details of the Australian Government's contribution to this odious trend, which it calls 'industry assistance'.
