Paul Cotton responds to Wendy Jarvie, who wrote about the lack of Australian aid to Latin America:

Your article could be read as stating that 20 million people in the Pacific are poor (living under $2 per day). This is misleading and would not be acceptable to all the people of the Pacific Islands. There will be some in Papua New Guinea, perhaps, who come into your category of poor but the average Pacific Islander has shelter and enough to eat. I hope that when your report is completed we will see more detail to support your statement.

Dr Jarvie responds:

The data for the Pacific includes the Philippines.  If only the PNG and the Pacific Islands are included, the number of poor people (under $2 a day) is much less. However, this only makes the point stronger — Australia spends a lot of aid on the Pacific for very few poor people, while there are 97 million poor in Latin America.
