Malcolm need not have been left scratching his head over my simple answer to his puzzle about Julia Gillard’s foreign policy and its three pillars, which she inherited from Kevin Rudd. There is no puzzle, and I am not unaware of the diversity of opinion among Asian countries (as my publications have shown for many years). I cited China as representative of the Asia pillar for four reasons: China is our largest bilateral trading partner, China is the only state that rivals the United States in power and influence in Asia, China effectively controls the East Asia Community, and Malcolm's interviewer was Chinese.
