Reader riposte: US Korea strategy

1 December 2010 08:43

Raymond Pritchett, from the maritime strategy blog, Information Dissemination, replies to Sam's post on the Korea stand-off:

You said 'It's hard to see how escalation of this conflict serves America's interests.'

I think that might be exactly what the Obama administration is going to try to do, or at least give every impression possible that is where they are heading. I don't think the US will actually attack, but I think the intent is to keep the skillet hot, perhaps even turn the heat up higher, and try to put some pressure on North Korea for a change.

Would the Obama administration bomb the USS Pueblo' Yeah, they might just do something unexpected like that.

There is a massive search for an indirect, irregular approach instead of diplomacy. I have no idea what they will come up with, but with the Carl Vinson carrier strike group and USAF moves like JOINT STARS, they might already have something in mind.
