Rethinking travel advisories

While the new government is thinking about the big things it might do on foreign policy, what about a little change that would be a good signal to our near-neighbour Indonesia: what about relaxing the travel advice that you should 'reconsider your need to travel' to Indonesia? This has not only discouraged Australian tourists from visiting Bali and beyond, but makes businesses and institutions more cautious in sending their staff to explore other opportunities.

More radical, we could get rid of the travel advisories all together, warn Australians that going overseas is often more dangerous than staying at home, but encourage them to go all the same. How can we know our neighbours if we never visit?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Good sense from Stephen, though as is the case with airport security, the counter-terrorism-industrial complex won't allow this to happen any time soon.
