Taking the I.E.D. fight to Massachusetts

I'm heading to a wedding in Massachusetts later this year, so you bet I am pleased with the news the US Federal government will be compelling Massachusetts to come up with a plan to protect the state against the threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (or I.E.D.s).

'I.E.D.’s? As in Iraq I.E.D.’s?' was Massachusetts homeland security adviser Juliette N. Kayyem's response on being told she could lose her full allotment of funding if she fails in her duties on this front. Sam has already bemoaned the loss of the humble garbage bin at Sydney railway stations, and while I.E.D.s might be a remote threat to the people of Massachusetts, they suggest the extent of US counter-terrorism efforts, which, on a global scale, appear to be helping drive a dramatic drop in terrorist attack fatalities.
