Tony Abbott and the Jordanisation of Iraq

Opposition frontbencher Tony Abbott is probably right to say that an Iraq which more closely resembles Jordan than Syria counts as progress. But what such arguments don't address is the issue of costs: is the 'Jordanisation' of Iraq enough of a gain, given what has been spent to get there? And what are the opportunity costs; what gains could we have made elsewhere with the same resources?

Trifle with Tony Abbott's arguments, we may, but let no one question his patriotism. This from the same interview:

...what was the world, what was America, Britain and Australia — in my opinion the three most important countries in the world — what were those countries going to do about Saddam Hussein?

I assume these countries are listed in ascending order.
