US to Russia: Please help us bomb Iran

I regularly link to the World Politics Review blog, but there's a WPR online magazine as well, which carries a column by Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Richard Weitz regarding rumours that Russia is about to sell long-range S-300 surface-to-air missiles to Iran. As Weitz explains, this is a sensitive matter for the US and Israel, since:

...the S-300s could enable Iran to establish a more comprehensive, multilayered air defense network that would make it much harder for American or Israeli warplanes to attack Bushehr or other targets in southern Iran.

That puts the case with admirable clarity. And stripped of diplomatic niceties, this must also be the argument Washington and Jerusalem are making to Moscow: 'please don't sell these weapons to Iran; it makes it harder for us to bomb them.' Tough sell, and difficult to see Russia being persuaded by it, particularly as the US floods the region with offensive weapons.
