I'm old enough to remember what the world was like before the communications revolution, so I'm still occasionally astonished at what has been achieved.

Case in point: about ten minutes ago I recorded a live interview with Al Jazeera English about rumours of another North Korean nuclear test. I'm not anywhere near a studio today, so instead, using Skype, they took a video feed off my webcam, meaning that hundreds of thousands (?) of Al Jazeera viewers have now seen a small part of my home office. That feels weird.

As for the interview itself, it seemed like the interviewer was trying really hard to get me to criticise the US. There's plenty of blame to go around on this issue, no doubt, but with North Korea going out of its way to escalate the situation, it seemed like the wrong emphasis. (I should add, she was kind enough to mention 'the Lowy Institute's online magazine' in her intro, so welcome to those Al Jazeera viewers who have found us!)
