What's our international reputation worth?

13 August 2008 15:58

God, how depressing. When the federal government isn't throwing money at mega-corporations to make their hybrid cars here or spending an estimated $40 million for each Olympic gold medal, state governments are 'luring' film production companies with cash handouts so they'll shoot movies in their state. And the news media is too awed by low wattage star power (Clive Owen! Scott Hicks!) to ask any tough questions.

Australia is a well-governed country by international standards. But these handout outbreaks, of which both major political parties are guilty, demonstrate a high level of cynicism by governments and more than a little gullibility on the part of the media and the public. Some argue such headline projects improve our international prestige, but maybe they just make us look like suckers.
