Part-time Assistant Online Editor
With The Interpreter's Assistant Editor, Andrew Carr, leaving us soon to pursue an academic career, the Lowy Institute is looking for a new part-time assistant online editor. The position will help build the Lowy Institute's online presence, supporting the The Interpreter, our social media presence and our website.

The duties of the position, in rough order of importance: • Sub-editing of submissions made to The Interpreter. o Including headline-writing, photo selection and editing, as well as general maintenance (non-technical) of the site. • Helping to build the Lowy Institute's social media presence. o Including maintenance of the Lowy Institute's Twitter and Facebook pages. • Producing occasional blog posts and website content. o Including aggregation (eg. 'Linkage' blog posts), summarising Lowy Institute events and publications for the website and producing audio and video clips. • Building/maintaining relations with outside bloggers and web editors to promote and syndicate Lowy Institute work.
Applicants need excellent written communications skills with experience in sub-editing, online publishing and website management experience, strong social media skills, experience in the use of multimedia production software, and preferably a familiarity with foreign policy and international relations.
It is preferred though not essential that applicants reside near the Lowy Institute (Sydney), but they must be Australia-based. The role could be performed remotely if the applicant has access to reliable high-speed internet and (home) office facilities and is willing to travel for occasional meetings.
The position is for 16 hours per week, but applicants must be able to work 32-hour weeks occasionally to cover absences.
The Lowy Institute Internship Program
The Lowy Institute for International Policy conducts an internship program that aims to connect talented international policy students and professionals with our research staff and the work that the institute conducts.
Lowy Interns: We are seeking talented individuals with a strong interest in contributing to Australian international policy. Lowy interns are typically undertaking a master’s degree in a relevant discipline or have completed postgraduate studies.
Interns will need to be enthusiastic and self-directed, possess excellent time management and administrative skills, and capably manage independent research tasks. The ability to think critically, write clearly, and communicate fluently is essential.
The internship program attracts a large number of outstanding candidates from around the world and is highly competitive.
Many past Lowy Institute interns have gone on to secure positions in international policy. Lowy Institute interns have also been highly successful in winning graduate traineeships with Australian Government departments. Our intern alumni include Rhodes Scholars, diplomats, journalists, and academics.
Internship Period: There is no set intake period for internships. Applications are accepted throughout the year in response to the demand from our research staff. The duration of internship varies and will be agreed between the research staff and intern.
Interns will work in our building at 31 Bligh Street, Sydney. Their main duties will be to work with Lowy Institute research staff on their major research projects and public events. Working hours will be flexible and per diem expenses will be covered. The internship program is unpaid and interns will not be supported with living or relocation expenses.

• A CV detailing your professional/academic experience and achievements (two pages maximum). • A one-page cover letter detailing why you want to intern at the Lowy Institute, your career ambitions, and why you should be considered. • A 500-word original blog post on any topic that you believe would be suitable for publication on the Lowy Institute’s blog (www.lowyinterpreter.org). • Contact details for two referees.
