Interview: Richard McGregor on Obama and the pivot

I'm in Washington and a couple of days ago I spoke with Financial Times Washington Bureau Chief Richard McGregor, who started his career as a correspondent with The Australian, was the FT's Beijing bureau chief and is known for his widely praised book The Party: The Secret World of China's Communist Rulers.

As you will hear, McGregor thinks the American media got it wrong on President Obama's Asia trip. Obama was criticised for not making more progress on the TPP trade pact, but McGregor argues that this was too much to hope for anyway.  He also speaks about Obama's recently announced West Point foreign policy speech, which he will deliver later this month. McGregor says Obama's foreign policy is defined by what America does not do, and that Obama needs to clarify what he stands for.
