James Spigelman

The Honourable James Spigelman AC was Chief Justice and Lieutenant Governor of New South Wales from 1998 to 2011. He is the author of several books and has published articles in legal journals in Australia, Europe and Asia.


He developed close relationships between the Australian judiciary and judiciaries in China, Singapore, India, Japan, Hong Kong, and England and Wales. Between 1972 and 1975, he served as Senior Advisor and Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of Australia. Between 2012 and 2017, he served as Chair of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and from 2013 to 2020 he was a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal.

Additionally, he serves as the Chairman of the Judith Neilson Institute.
