Lowy Institute appoints Richard McGregor as a Senior Fellow

The Lowy Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard McGregor as a Senior Fellow.

Richard is one of the world’s leading writers and commentators on Asia. He served as the Financial Times’ bureau chief in Shanghai, Beijing and Washington. Prior to joining the Financial Times he established a bureau for The Australian in Beijing. He has worked as a foreign correspondent in Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong and China, and has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the International Herald Tribune, the BBC, The Guardian and the Far Eastern Economic Review. He was also stationed in Tokyo for the ABC.

Richard is the author of the widely acclaimed book, The Party: The Secret World of China’s Communist Rulers, published in 2010. His most recent book, Asia’s Reckoning: China, Japan, and the Fate of U.S. Power in the Pacific Century, was included in the Financial Times’ list of best books on politics in 2017.

“Today there is intense debate about the implications of China’s rise for Asia and the competition for influence in the region. Richard McGregor will provide insights on these and other issues, drawing on his deep knowledge and experience across Asia. I am delighted to welcome Richard to the Institute,” said Dr Michael Fullilove, Executive Director of the Lowy Institute.

Richard will commence work at the Lowy Institute’s Sydney headquarters at the start of March 2018.
