Lowy Institute launches ‘playbook’ for Australia’s G20 presidency

In a new Lowy Institute Report the Director of the Lowy Institute’s G20 Studies Centre, Mike Callaghan, outlines the strategy, priorities and steps required for the Brisbane G20 Summit to be a success.

In less than seven weeks, Australia will take over as chair of the G20, the world’s premier forum for economic cooperation. When G20 Leaders meet in Brisbane in November 2014, it will be the largest international economic meeting ever held in Australia.

‘For both Australia and the future of the G20, the Brisbane G20 Leaders’ Summit must be a success’, said report author Mike Callaghan.

‘Australia has a golden opportunity to improve the way the G20 works, define a focussed agenda and directly engage key global  leaders’, he said.

Playbook for the G20 Brisbane Summit identifies five priorities for the Brisbane summit. These include developing a ‘G20 coordinated growth strategy’; breathing life back into the multilateral trading system; tackling climate change financing; delivering tangible progress in the international efforts to combat tax evasion and avoidance; and, mainstreaming development into the G20 agenda.

‘This ‘playbook’ gives a step-by-step guide for the Brisbane summit to be a success’, says Callaghan.

This report is published by the Lowy Institute’s G20 Studies Centre. The G20 Studies Centre, which was established with funding by the Australian Government, aims to generate new ideas and publish policy research and analysis to help build a stronger and more effective G20.  G20 related research papers, including G20 Monitors, are available free of charge on the G20 Studies Centre website.
