Update: Statement on the Lowy Institute Media Award Lecture.

Lowy Institute Media Award lecture to be named in honour of Mark Colvin and 2017 lecture to be delivered by New York Times columnist Bret Stephens

The Lowy Institute is delighted to announce that the address delivered at the annual Lowy Institute Media Award dinner will be named the Mark Colvin Lecture in honour of the late foreign affairs journalist, Mark Colvin.

The Institute is also delighted to announce that the 2017 Mark Colvin Lecture will be delivered by The New York Times columnist, Bret Stephens.

Mark Colvin was an award-winning journalist whose forty-year career at the ABC as a broadcaster, author, presenter, film-maker and foreign correspondent made him a household name. With insight and clarity, Mark covered countless history-defining events, from the Iranian hostage crisis and famines in Africa to the Rwandan genocide and the break-up of the Soviet Union. He is best known for his role as the host of ABC Radio’s PM from 1997 until 2017.

‘Mark was one of Australia’s finest foreign correspondents, and had many friends and admirers at the Lowy Institute. We wanted to acknowledge and celebrate his work by naming the annual Lowy Institute Media Award lecture after him. We believe it is a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career’, said Lowy Institute Executive Director, Dr Michael Fullilove.

We are pleased that the inaugural Mark Colvin Lecture will be delivered by one of the world’s most influential foreign affairs columnists. A Pulitzer Prize winner, Bret Stephens’ extensive career has spanned major roles at The Wall Street Journal, The Jerusalem Post and most recently The New York Times. His thought-provoking commentary has earned him numerous awards and distinctions, including two honorary doctorates.

Now in its fifth year, the Lowy Institute Media Award recognises excellence in foreign affairs journalism. The Award is presented to an Australian journalist (or journalistic team), working in print, broadcast or online media, who has deepened the knowledge or shaped the discussion of international policy issues in Australia.

The Lowy Institute Media Award dinner will be held at NSW Parliament House on Saturday,23 September. The 2017 shortlist will be announced on Friday, 25 August 2017.
