Michael Altman-Lupu is a Global Public Service Fellow working with ARTICLE 19 to protect and defend freedom of expression in Southeast Asia.

He has more than four years of experience in the region, having previously worked as an educator in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. During his law school summers, Michael worked to defend civil liberties with the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, DC and with Chapter Four Uganda in Kampala. Based on his experience in Uganda, Michael published a note in the Columbia Human Rights Law Review on the free expression implications of Uganda’s tax on the use of social media. 

Michael received his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School. There, he was an articles editor of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review and a member of the Human Rights Clinic, working with Mwatana for Human Rights to hold to account those responsible for human rights abuses in Yemen. At Columbia, Michael was a two-time James Kent Scholar, a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and the 2018 John S. Bainbridge Fellow.
