13 August 2025
The Lowy Institute is pleased to announce the three finalists for the 2025 Lowy Institute Media Award. The award recognises excellence in coverage of international affairs by Australian journalists and media outlets.
The finalists are:
- Will Glasgow for his work as The Australian’s North Asia Correspondent, including a selection of stories covering the US–China trade war, China’s energy policy, China’s perspective on AUKUS, and the ongoing impact of the pandemic.
- Freelance journalist Prue Lewarne for her story ‘The Beast: Mexico’s Deadliest Train’ for SBS’s Dateline program.
- Sue-Lin Wong for her eight-part podcast series, ‘Scam Inc.’, for The Economist, which examines the impact of the sophisticated international industry of online scams.
On this year’s judging panel, Lowy Institute Executive Director Dr Michael Fullilove was joined by The Australian journalist Paul Kelly, ABC journalist Leigh Sales, Nine journalist Allison Langdon, and Lowy Institute Board member Mark Ryan.

The Institute is also pleased to announce that Susan Glasser, the Washington correspondent for The New Yorker and a Lowy Institute Board member, will deliver the 2025 Lowy Institute Media Lecture alongside her husband Peter Baker, the Chief White House Correspondent for The New York Times.
“This year's finalists remind us why Australia needs Australian journalists reporting on the world — bringing pragmatism, independence and a sharp eye for our national interest to the global beat,” said Lowy Institute Executive Director Dr Michael Fullilove.
The Lowy Institute Media Award has been presented each year since 2013 to recognise excellence in coverage of international affairs by Australian journalists and media outlets.
The winner of the 2025 Lowy Institute Media Award will be announced on Tuesday 30 September. The winner of the award receives a prize of AU$20,000 and a distinctive trophy by Dinosaur Designs.
