Eric Tlozek on his Lowy Institute Media Award nomination

Eric Tlozek is nominated for his coverage of the 2017 national elections in Papua New Guinea, and for his Foreign Correspondent episode ‘A Bloody Boycott’. His reports were critical to understanding PNG’s latest election and the bilateral ties between Papua New Guinea and Australia.

Eric Tlozek is Papua New Guinea Correspondent at the ABC. He has a strong interest in regional and community issues and has previously worked in Alice Springs, Darwin, Brisbane and Canberra.

Cameron Stewart on his Lowy Institute Media Award nomination

Cameron Stewart is nominated for two bodies of work that appeared in The Australian. The first is Stewart’s revelation and subsequent reporting on the data leak from French naval company DCNS. The leaked documents raised concerns over the $50 billion submarine contract between DCNS and the Australian Government. The second is for his analysis of the Australia–US relationship under the Trump administration. 

Cameron Stewart is an Associate Editor and Washington Correspondent at The Australian. He reports on foreign affairs, defence and national security.

Sophie McNeill on her Lowy Institute Media Award nomination

Sophie McNeill is nominated for the 2017 Lowy Institute Media Award for her coverage of the siege of Aleppo, and her Foreign Correspondent episode ‘Yemen: The War on Children’ (shot by cameraman Aaron Hollett). The Walkley Award-winning special revealed the impact of Yemen’s civil war on the nation’s children.

Sophie McNeill is Middle East Correspondent at the ABC. She has twice been awarded ‘Australian Young TV Journalist of the Year’ and in 2010 won a Walkley Award for her investigation into the killing of five children in Afghanistan by Australian Special Forces soldiers.

Paul Farrell on Guardian Australia's Lowy Institute Media Award nomination

Guardian Australia is nominated for the 2017 Lowy Institute Media Award for its reporting on two thousand leaked incident reports written by staff at Australia’s detention centre in Nauru between 2013 and 2015. Dubbed ‘The Nauru Files’, the reports detailed allegations of assault, sexual abuse and self-harm. Guardian Australia broke the story in a series of reports and web interactives.

Paul Farrell was until recently a reporter at Guardian Australia, where he was the lead reporter on ‘The Nauru Files’. He is now senior reporter at BuzzFeed Australia, writing on issues concerning national security and immigration.

Ben Doherty is a reporter at Guardian Australia and has won three Walkley Awards for his foreign affairs and immigration reporting.

Helen Davidson reports from the Northern Territory for Guardian Australia.

Nick Evershed is the data and interactives editor at Guardian Australia.

Nick McKenzie and Chris Uhlmann on their Lowy Institute Media Award nomination

Nick McKenzie, Richard Baker, Chris Uhlmann and Sashka Koloff are nominated for their joint Fairfax/Four Corners investigation into the Chinese Communist Party’s influence in Australian society and politics. Their investigation tracked the activities of Beijing-backed organisations and efforts to intimidate opponents of the Chinese Communist Party. 

Nick McKenzie is an investigative journalist at Fairfax who has won seven Walkley Awards. He reports on issues of corruption in politics, business and sport.

Richard Baker is an investigative journalist who has been with Fairfax for 12 years, breaking major international and national corruption scandals. 

Chris Uhlmann was until recently political editor at the ABC across TV, radio and online. In 2008 he won a Walkley Award for broadcast interviewing. He is now the Nine Network’s chief political editor.

Sashka Koloff has worked in radio and television broadcasting for over 20 years, and is currently a producer with ABC’s Four Corners.

Matt Brown on his Lowy Institute Media Award nomination

Matt Brown is nominated for the 2017 Lowy Institute Media Award for his coverage of the effort to retake Mosul from Islamic State. Brown’s coverage included reports on ABC radio, TV and online. In his February Four Corners episode ‘Highway to Hell’, Brown and his cameraman Aaron Hollett took audiences to the frontline of one of the most important campaigns of the war in Iraq and Syria.
  
Matt Brown is Middle East Correspondent at the ABC, based in Beirut. Brown has reported on a wide range of stories in the Middle East, from the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict to investigations into Australian jihadists operating in Syria. He was formerly the ABC’s Indonesia Correspondent and National Security Correspondent, and is a four-time Walkley Award winner.
