In Canberra, his roles included advising the Prime Minister on Australia's international relations, adviser to the Foreign Minister, managing Australia's diplomatic presence in Africa, and director of the Indonesia desk, looking after one of Australia’s most important bilateral relationships.

Overseas, he served as political counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC, and he continues to closely follow US politics and strategic affairs and maintains close relationships there.
