First Nations Foreign Policy: Strengthening Australia–Papua New Guinea Ties
What role can First Nations foreign policy play in deepening the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea — and what do emerging leaders from both nations see as the path forward?
At this special Canberra event, the Lowy Institute marked the Australian launch of the Australia–Papua New Guinea Network Emerging Leaders Dialogue Outcomes Report 2023: First Nations Foreign Policy: Strengthening Australia–PNG Ties. The evening brought together policymakers, practitioners, and a new generation of leaders to explore how First Nations perspectives and relationships can forge stronger, more enduring ties between the two neighbouring nations.
The keynote address was delivered by Justin Mohamed, Australia's inaugural Ambassador for First Nations People, followed by candid conversations with emerging leaders who participated in the 2023 dialogue. The event was chaired by Aus–PNG Network Project Director Mihai Sora and Pacific Islands Program Research Fellow Dr Jessica Collins.

About the speakers
Justin Mohamed is Australia's inaugural Ambassador for First Nations People, appointed to advance First Nations perspectives in Australia's foreign policy and international engagement.
Mihai Sora is Director of the Pacific Islands Program at the Lowy Institute and Project Director of the Australia–Papua New Guinea Network.
Dr Jessica Collins is a Research Fellow in the Pacific Islands Program at the Lowy Institute.
