US Election — Where to now?
The United States has spoken – and the world is taking stock of what comes next.
In this Lowy Institute panel discussion, US and Australian scholars came together in the immediate aftermath of one of the most consequential and closely watched American elections in modern history. With the result in and its implications still unfolding, the panel assessed the outcome, examined the potential for post-election disputes, and explored what the result means for Australia and the broader Indo-Pacific region — across trade, national security, and policy towards China and Asia.
Senior Fellow for East Asia Richard McGregor led the conversation with Australian Financial Review International Editor James Curran, and visiting scholars Charles Edel and Kathryn Paik from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC.
Richard McGregor is Senior Fellow for East Asia at the Lowy Institute, former Beijing and Washington bureau chief for the Financial Times, and author of several books on East Asia.
James Curran is International Editor of the Australian Financial Review and Professor of Modern History at the University of Sydney. His most recent book is Australia's China Odyssey: From Euphoria to Fear (NewSouth). A former analyst with the Office of National Assessments and Fulbright Scholar at Georgetown University, he was previously a nonresident fellow at the Lowy Institute.
Charles Edel is a Senior Adviser and inaugural Australia Chair at CSIS. He has previously taught at the University of Sydney, served as a senior fellow at the United States Studies Centre, taught strategy and policy at the US Naval War College, and served on the US Secretary of State's Policy Planning Staff from 2015 to 2017.
Kathryn Paik is a Senior Fellow with the Australia Chair at CSIS. She served in the US Marine Corps for more than 23 years, most recently as Director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific on the National Security Council (2021–23), where she led the creation of the first US Pacific Partnership Strategy and the inaugural US–Pacific Islands Forum Summit.
